Important: This historical data uses different anonymization than the 2025 dataset. We have no confirmation that lab names (e.g., "LabA") in this 2021โ€“2023 data correspond to the same entities as similarly-named labs (e.g., "Lab_A") in the 2025 dashboard. The 2024 data was not included in the state's open data release. This dataset does not include an explicit pass/fail field or heavy metals testing โ€” YM pass/fail is derived using the regulatory threshold of >10,000 CFU = fail. Heavy metals analyses are only available on the 2025 dashboard.

Benford's Law compliance and statistical anomaly detection

Benford's Law โ€” Yeast & Mold Results

Chi-squared distance from expected Benford distribution ยท Lower = more natural

Benford's Law Explained

Benford's Law predicts that in naturally occurring datasets spanning multiple orders of magnitude, the leading digit "1" appears ~30% of the time, "2" appears ~18%, and so on. Deviations can signal data anomalies.

Highest deviation:

LabY: ฯ‡ยฒ=43.57 โ€” 7.8% of first digits are "2" (expected: 17.6%)

LabO: ฯ‡ยฒ=36.10 โ€” 57.2% of first digits are "1" (expected: 30.1%)

Closest to natural:

LabE: ฯ‡ยฒ=1.22 โ€” nearly perfect Benford fit

LabB: ฯ‡ยฒ=3.13 โ€” excellent compliance

ฯ‡ยฒ critical value at p=0.05 with 8 degrees of freedom is 15.5. Labs above this threshold have statistically significant deviations from Benford's Law.
